What is the relationship between the Mishnah and the Talmud?

Part to whole. The Talmud is comprised of the Mishnah, a 63-volume compendium of Jewish oral law written c. 200 CE, and the Gemara, commentary and explanation on the vast and confusing Mishnah written c. 500 CE.
