Song files have taken over my desktop?

i have 400 songs to date. i did a computer reboot to update avg and when i got back to my desktop after the reboot the desktop is full of my new songs. i cannot even see my original icons but recycle bin. i decided ok quick fix ill just delete the 50 or so songs on the desktop. after highlighting them all and pressing delete its telling me there is 3000 files on my desktop??? please help i have never seen this issue before. i did a full virus scan with avg and scanned with spybot.
